• Squarespace’s "Design Intelligence" uses AI to create customizable website designs, blending automation with human input.

Squarespace has launched "Design Intelligence," an AI-powered website builder designed to streamline and personalize the website creation process. Paul Gubbay, Squarespace's chief product officer, discussed the company’s approach, highlighting its emphasis on curation and user experience rather than simply adding AI features.

According to Gubbay, other AI-powered builders produce "confusing, ugly websites" when given generic prompts, but Squarespace aims to deliver a more refined and professional output.

The Design Intelligence tool starts with basic prompts, allowing users to specify details such as the type of website and the brand personality. The AI then generates a complete website design, including text and images, which looks polished and “real” rather than artificial. Gubbay emphasized the importance of customization, stating, “We want it to feel like a playground,” indicating that users can modify elements to achieve a bespoke look.

Squarespace uses AI partners like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, but the company’s focus remains on curation.

“We have a very specific, proprietary point of view on how we prompt engines and how we curate the content that comes out of them,” Gubbay noted.

This approach extends to AI-generated imagery, color palettes, and layout designs, all carefully selected to align with Squarespace’s aesthetic and customer needs.

Gubbay stressed that AI is meant to enhance, not replace, the role of designers.

“I 1 million percent do not believe it replaces design,” he said.

Instead, Squarespace aims to make design processes faster and more efficient for professionals, ensuring that while AI aids in creation, the final product remains uniquely tailored to each customer.
