Meta, Facebook's parent company, has announced significant updates aimed at attracting younger users, as the platform's U.S. teen user base has declined to 33%, compared to 71% in 2014.
These changes, revealed during a Facebook IRL pop-up event in Austin, are designed to emphasize local community information, entertainment options, and updates to core Facebook products like Meta AI, Facebook Dating, and Messenger.
Facebook's redesign includes a new “Local” tab that aggregates local content from Marketplace, Groups, and Events. This feature is being tested in select U.S. cities such as Austin, New York City, Los Angeles, and more. It will allow users to discover nearby activities, buy/sell items, and find local recommendations all in one place. In addition, a new swipeable section in users’ feeds will display local events, groups, and businesses, helping people connect with their communities.
The platform is also launching an “Explore” tab, offering personalized recommendations powered by an algorithm. This feature aims to connect users to niche interests, providing content like travel tips, DIY projects, and running groups. The Explore tab will be prominently placed on the app's navigation bar, resembling a Pinterest-style layout with sections for “For You” and “Nearby” feeds.
Facebook's video experience will also receive an update, offering a full-screen player for short-form, long-form, and live videos. Meta highlights that young adults spend around 60% of their time on Facebook watching videos, with Reels being a popular feature. The company hopes these updates will appeal to younger users seeking entertainment and local community connections.
