- Rooms, the 3D design app, surpassed 1 million user-created spaces and now offers over 10,000 items in its design inventory, up from 7,500 in April 2024.
- Google invested $1 million in Rooms as a SAFE funding deal, granting early access to Gemini AI for features like text-to-speech narration.
Rooms, a 3D design app by Things, Inc., has reached a major milestone with over 1 million user-created spaces. Launched in beta in 2023, the platform allows users to design interactive 3D rooms and mini-games using a library of more than 10,000 editable items. This inventory, which has grown from 7,500 items as of April 2024, provides a rich toolkit for digital creativity.
The platform recently secured $1 million in funding directly from Google, structured as a SAFE. This arrangement gives Google the option to invest in Rooms' future Series A round. The deal also grants Rooms early access to Google’s Gemini AI, which will soon power innovative features like text-to-speech narration and customizable character tones, enabling broader storytelling capabilities.
Rooms 3.0, launched in November 2024, introduced a no-code Actions editor that simplifies the process of adding interactivity to designs. This aligns with the app's vision of being both a creative outlet and an introduction to coding, supported by the Lua programming language.
“Initially, creators were building simple spaces and mini-games using the technology, but more recent trends see people building even larger spaces and using the app to tell stories,” said Jason Toff, a co-founder of Rooms.
The app has grown steadily, reaching a quarter-million registered users last year. While user engagement metrics remain undisclosed, its popularity is evident through the sheer volume of creations and user-driven trends.
Rooms is currently available on the web and iOS. Although monetization features have not yet been introduced, the platform's potential is bolstered by backing from high-profile investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, and Adobe’s Chief Strategy Officer, Scott Belsky.
With Google's support, Rooms is positioned to redefine digital creativity and storytelling.
