Ripple Labs Co-Founder Chris Larsen has formally endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her 2024 presidential run, joining 88 other corporate executives in backing her candidacy. This endorsement comes despite Ripple’s significant financial contributions to pro-crypto political action committees (PACs) that have supported both Republican and Democratic candidates, revealing a potential divide within Ripple’s leadership.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has shown a preference for Republican candidates in the past, even donating $50,000 to a super PAC aimed at building a Republican Senate majority. Additionally, Garlinghouse’s contributions have targeted Democrats critical of cryptocurrency, such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a prominent crypto skeptic. Ripple itself has donated approximately $48 million to the Fairshake PAC, which seeks to elect crypto-friendly candidates across both parties.
Garlinghouse has been vocal about his views on the Democratic Party’s approach to cryptocurrency, saying,
“The Dems aren't winning any votes for being anti-crypto (and thus anti-innovation), while the Republicans are gaining votes for embracing and encouraging innovation here in the U.S.”
He has urged Harris to adopt a more open-minded stance on crypto regulation, noting her deep connections to Silicon Valley and the opportunity to reset U.S. competitiveness in the space.
Although former President Donald Trump has gained considerable support from the crypto industry, Harris’s campaign has signaled a potential shift by allowing cryptocurrency donations through platforms like Coinbase, indicating that Democrats may be warming to the industry’s growing influence.
