Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has introduced a new AI and ML-powered tool to streamline the trademark clearance process, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
Speaking about the initiative, Goyal emphasized that AI must be embraced by all sectors as it would further improve the ease of doing business.
“It (AI/ML search tool) will help clear trademark applications much faster, efficiently and accurately,” he stated.
The AI tool, along with an IP chatbot to expedite query processing, is set to fortify India's intellectual property (IP) landscape. Goyal also highlighted that AI's rapid adoption would enhance work outcomes across various fields, reinforcing its importance as an "existential tool." India currently ranks as the third-largest trademark and sixth-largest patent filer globally. In 2023 alone, over one lakh patents were granted, a significant rise from the 6,000 granted in 2014-15.
In a related initiative, on September 16, Goyal launched the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) under the 'Startup India' program. Designed to empower India’s startup ecosystem, BHASKAR will foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and competition.
"With the Sun comes enlightenment, light, growth, and BHASKAR will help in collaboration, cooperation, and also enable competition among each other," Goyal said.
The government aims to make the startup ecosystem more interconnected, socialized, and globally recognized.
"Technology and interconnectivity will help Indians build 'Brand India' as a tool to market our products and services across the world,"
Goyal remarked, stressing the need for startups to achieve global success while upholding integrity and quality.
