• Piramal Pharma has transitioned its Digwal facility’s steam boiler from coal to biomass briquettes, cutting annual emissions by 24,000 tCO2e.
  • The initiative supports Piramal’s goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, promoting sustainable energy use.

Piramal Pharma has transitioned its coal-fired steam boiler at its Digwal, India, facility to operate on biomass briquettes, a renewable energy source derived from agricultural waste.

This move is expected to reduce the company’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e), representing 17% of its total emissions.

Also, the conversion aligns with Piramal Pharma's sustainability target to cut Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030.

"The transition to biomass briquettes at our Digwal facility is a testament to our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint while driving innovation in sustainable manufacturing. As we align our goals with global climate action frameworks, we will continue to contribute to a more sustainable future for generations to come," said Nandini Piramal, Chairperson, Piramal Pharma Limited.

Biomass briquettes, made by compressing organic waste materials, support circular economy principles by recycling agricultural by-products, reducing waste, and promoting renewable energy use.

This initiative supports Piramal's global sustainability goals and demonstrates how pharmaceutical companies can implement effective climate action solutions while maintaining operational excellence. Additionally, the company has stated that it remains committed to responsible growth through environmentally friendly practices to support a greener future.
