Indus Appstore, an Android app marketplace developed by PhonePe, has secured a multi-year agreement with Xiaomi India, marking a major step in building localized digital infrastructure in the country.

As part of this collaboration, Xiaomi will integrate Indus Appstore on all new smartphones sold in India, replacing its existing GetApps platform. The transition will also extend to current Xiaomi devices through a software update.

A Push for a Localized Mobile Ecosystem

The partnership underscores a shared commitment between Indus Appstore and Xiaomi India to offer a mobile experience tailored to Indian users. Indus Appstore Chief Business Officer Priya M. Narasimhan called the agreement a milestone in creating “a horizontal app store for Indian mobile users and developers.”

She highlighted the opportunities it presents for developers to expand their reach while providing users with a culturally relevant platform.

Xiaomi India Chief Operating Officer Sudhin Mathur echoed this sentiment, stating that the demand for a homegrown app marketplace is at an all-time high. He described the move as a “strategic step” to empower Indian developers and enhance app discovery.

Mathur also emphasized Xiaomi’s commitment to “Make for India” solutions, reinforcing the need for indigenous innovation as the country’s digital landscape evolves.

Enhancing User and Developer Experience

Indus Appstore aims to create an engaging and accessible platform for Indian smartphone users, supporting 12 Indian languages and offering a video-first approach to app previews. It also includes voice-enabled search in 10 languages, eliminating the need for specialized keyboards.

With over 500,000 apps and games across 45 categories, the app store promises a diverse selection for users. Developers will benefit from self-publishing tools, localization support, and 24x7 customer assistance, enabling them to better navigate the Indian app market.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
