• OpenAI's new policy will allow ChatGPT to answer more questions and provide multiple perspectives on controversial topics.
  • ChatGPT will remain neutral on sensitive issues, offering context for movements like "Black Lives Matter" and "All Lives Matter."

OpenAI is changing its approach to how it trains AI models, with a new emphasis on embracing “intellectual freedom … no matter how challenging or controversial a topic may be.”

The company introduced this shift in a recent policy update, announcing that ChatGPT will be able to answer a wider range of questions, offer more perspectives, and reduce the number of topics it avoids.

This update is part of a broader effort by OpenAI to change how it defines "AI safety." The company revealed these changes through an update to its Model Spec, a 187-page document outlining how AI models are trained. The new guiding principle now emphasizes the importance of truthfulness, stating that the AI must not lie by either making false statements or omitting crucial context.

In a new section titled "Seek the truth together," OpenAI expressed its goal for ChatGPT to avoid taking editorial stances, even if some topics are morally controversial. As an example, the company asserts that ChatGPT should support both “Black lives matter” and “all lives matter,” without picking a side. The AI will express its “love for humanity” and provide context for each movement, aiming to remain neutral on politically charged issues.

OpenAI acknowledges that this principle may be controversial, as it requires the AI to remain neutral on topics that some may find offensive or morally wrong. However, the company clarifies that the role of an AI assistant is to assist humanity rather than shape it.

While ChatGPT's scope will expand, it will still refuse to engage in harmful conversations or endorse falsehoods. Critics speculate that these changes could be a response to conservative criticism of ChatGPT’s perceived left-leaning safeguards, although OpenAI rejects the idea that it is seeking to appease political figures. Instead, the company emphasizes its commitment to giving users more control.
