• OpenAI is in talks to buy Windsurf, formerly Codeium, for about $3 billion, intensifying competition in the AI coding assistant market.
  • Windsurf generates around $40 million in annual recurring revenue, less than rival Cursor, which OpenAI also backs.
  • The acquisition would strengthen OpenAI’s AI development offerings amid growing demand for AI-powered coding tools.

OpenAI is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Windsurf, a prominent AI coding assistant, for approximately $3 billion.

This potential acquisition would significantly expand OpenAI’s developer tool portfolio and position it more directly against competitors such as Cursor, another AI coding platform backed by OpenAI’s Startup Fund.

Windsurf, previously known as Codeium, has built a strong user base since its 2021 founding by MIT graduates Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen.

The company currently generates about $40 million in annual recurring revenue, notably lower than Cursor’s $200 million ARR.

Windsurf recently sought additional funding at a $2.85 billion valuation, indicating strong investor interest.

Signs of the impending deal include Windsurf offering users a chance to lock in subscription pricing ahead of an announcement and OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer publicly praising Windsurf’s technology.

If completed, the acquisition would enhance OpenAI’s competitive edge in the fast-growing AI coding assistant space and further its mission to empower developers with cutting-edge AI tools.
