Mass Protests Erupt Over Musk's Federal Power Grab Through DOGE

Thousands of protesters flooded New York City streets on Presidents' Day to voice opposition to Elon Musk's controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), marking one of several demonstrations across major U.S. cities.

The protest, which drew over 10,000 participants according to NYPD estimates, began at Union Square and culminated at Washington Square Park.

Demonstrators expressed alarm over DOGE's unprecedented access to sensitive government systems and its aggressive downsizing of federal agencies.

Since its creation through a Trump executive order, DOGE has terminated nearly 10,000 federal workers and prompted 75,000 more to accept buyouts.

The agency has also gained control over the Treasury Department's digital payments system, which manages trillions in Social Security benefits and tax refunds, despite questions about security clearances and cybersecurity practices.

Protesters highlighted concerns about Musk's apparent conflicts of interest.

"He's so conflicted and it's so clear that his antiregulatory attitudes benefit him personally and financially," said Corwin, a 39-year-old small business owner at the rally.

Musk has targeted agencies that regulate his own companies, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The controversy has begun to impact Musk's business interests, particularly Tesla. The automaker faces declining sales in Europe, where several companies have severed ties following Musk's political activities, including his support for Trump and Germany's far-right AfD party.

Legal challenges have emerged questioning DOGE's transparency and data privacy practices, while critics argue the agency's actions could increase corruption and national security risks rather than reduce them.
