• Nintendo’s Virtual Game Cards allow digital game transfers between devices, mimicking the convenience of physical cartridges.
  • Family Group sharing enables users to lend digital games for 14 days, making game borrowing easier than ever.
  • The announcement comes just before the Switch 2 reveal, signaling a push for smoother digital game portability.

Nintendo just pulled a game-changing move. With the Switch 2 on the horizon, they’re introducing Virtual Game Cards - a feature that lets digital games behave more like physical cartridges.

No more being tied to one device. No more repurchasing. Just seamless portability.

For years, digital game ownership felt like a raw deal. Buy a game, and it’s locked to one console. But starting in April, players can transfer their digital games between devices with a local connection. Even better? Game lending is now a reality.

Up to eight people in a Nintendo Family Group can share games via local Wi-Fi. Borrow a title for 14 days, and it automatically returns like a modern-day Blockbuster rental but without late fees.

This comes right before the much-anticipated Switch 2 announcement on April 2.

Nintendo is clearly setting the stage for an easy transition. If the new console supports Virtual Game Cards from the start, players could switch (pun intended) without leaving their libraries behind.

More than just convenience, this is Nintendo pushing digital ownership forward. A win for gamers. A nudge for the industry. And a reminder that sometimes, innovation is about bringing back what we loved—just in a smarter way.
