• Meta is launching a new video editing app called Edits, targeting creators and offering features like inspiration tabs, idea trackers, and performance insights.
  • Edits will be available on iOS next month, with an Android version to follow later.

Meta has announced its latest innovation, a video editing app named Edits, designed to compete with ByteDance’s CapCut. The announcement follows CapCut's removal from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store amid the TikTok ban.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed the news on Threads, stating that Edits will debut on iOS next month, with an Android version to follow. The app aims to enhance the experience of creators who edit videos on their phones, offering a range of features tailored to their needs.

“Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” Mosseri wrote.

The app will include a suite of creative tools, a dedicated inspiration tab, an idea tracker, and a high-quality camera. It also allows users to share drafts with collaborators and track video performance insights on Instagram after publishing. Mosseri clarified that the app is targeted at creators rather than casual users, stating,

“It’s more for creators than casual video makers.”

Meta has a history of filling market gaps, launching Instagram Reels shortly after TikTok’s India ban in 2020 and introducing Threads as a competitor to text-based platforms like X in 2023. With CapCut’s uncertain future, Meta aims to capture creators seeking alternatives.

Meanwhile, competition in the video editing space continues to grow. Earlier this month, a16z-backed app Captions switched to a freemium model, further intensifying the race to attract users.
