- Shopify removes Kanye West's swastika T-shirt store citing fraud concerns, not hate speech.
- The platform continues to host another store selling Holocaust denial merchandise despite recent incidents.
Kanye West, who goes by Ye, caused an uproar when he promoted controversial merchandise through a Super Bowl commercial on Sunday, directing viewers to his website.
During the Super Bowl commercial West promoted his online store, directing viewers to his website which was selling swastika T-shirts.
Shopify shut down the store on Tuesday, citing potential fraud rather than the Nazi symbolism, according to an internal memo obtained by The Logic.
While the E-commerce platform was quick to remove West's online store the company's response has raised questions about its content moderation policies.
The platform's response comes after it removed its policy banning "hateful content" last year. "
All merchants are responsible for following the rules of our platform. This merchant did not engage in authentic commerce practices and violated our terms so we removed them from Shopify," the company stated.
The incident coincided with West's antisemitic posts on X, where he expressed support for Nazi ideology before his account was removed.
However, TechCrunch has identified another Shopify store with 200,000 followers that continues to sell products glorifying Auschwitz death camps and promoting Holocaust denial, highlighting apparent inconsistencies in the platform's enforcement policies.
Despite requests for clarification, Shopify has not commented on why the second antisemitic store remains operational while West's was removed, raising concerns about the platform's stance on hate speech and controversial merchandise.
