• Chef Robotics pivoted from fast-casual restaurants to high-mix manufacturing after struggling with technical challenges.

  • The pivot allows Chef Robotics to gather real-world training data for future advancements.

Chef Robotics, a food tech robotics startup founded by Rajat Bhageria, has emerged as a rare success in a challenging industry.

The company recently raised $23 million in a Series A round and has marquee customers like Amy’s Kitchen and Chef Bombay. Its robots have prepared 45 million meals across the U.S., but the journey wasn’t easy.

Chef Robotics initially aimed to build robots for fast-casual restaurants, an industry plagued by labor shortages. Despite signing multimillion-dollar contracts, the company couldn’t solve the "grasping problem"—training robots to handle diverse ingredients like blueberries or cheese without damaging them.

When customers refused to let Chef Robotics gather training data incrementally, Bhageria made a bold decision: he turned away those contracts.

Instead, the company pivoted to “high mix manufacturing,” serving food makers that produce thousands of meal trays for airlines, hospitals, and frozen food markets.

These businesses face similar labor shortages but operate assembly lines where each worker adds a single ingredient repeatedly—an ideal environment for Chef Robotics’ flexible robots.

This pivot paid off. By partnering with food makers, Chef Robotics trains its bots on real-world data, improving their ability to handle diverse ingredients. The company plans to eventually return to fast-casual restaurants with more advanced technology.

The recent surge in AI funding also helped Bhageria close the Series A round quickly, led by Avataar Venture Partners and supported by Construct Capital and others.

With $38.8 million raised in total and a $26.75 million loan from Silicon Valley Bank for equipment financing, Chef Robotics is poised for further growth.
