Freename, a Swiss-based domain registrar at the intersection of Web2 and Web3 technologies, has secured $6.5 million in a Series A funding round.

The investment, led by Entrée Capital with participation from Polymorphic Capital, will support the company’s efforts to unify digital identity ecosystems, drive innovation, and scale operations globally.

The round also included continued support from seed backers Sparkle Ventures, Blockchain Founders Fund, and Golden Record Ventures.

New angel investors include Mike Lobanov (Target Global), the Rashwan family office, and Aaron Schnarch (former CEO of Coinbase Custody).

Building the Foundation for Interoperable Digital Identity

Freename addresses the growing need to bridge traditional DNS and blockchain-based naming systems.

With nearly six billion internet users and a growing share engaging with decentralised platforms, the gap between IP and wallet addresses has become increasingly relevant. The number of Web3 wallets has already surpassed that of registered domain names.

By merging DNS infrastructure with blockchain compatibility, Freename enables domains that are not only readable but programmable and secure.

Its proprietary DNS technology is compatible with major blockchains like Polygon, Solana, Base, and BNB Chain, and works across standard browsers such as Chrome and Safari.

Freename offers tools for individuals and businesses to create and monetise custom Top-Level Domains (TLDs), unlocking new revenue streams. Its resolution protocol, licensed to traditional DNS providers, ensures seamless Web2-Web3 interoperability.

The company also developed a collision management system to address identical domain names across different blockchains and registrars.

Freename recently became the first Web3 registrar to obtain an ICANN license, expanding its scope to include traditional domain sales.

With a Total Addressable Market estimated at $141 billion, the company is poised for significant growth.
