• France and UAE agree to invest up to €50 billion in AI infrastructure, including a 1GW data center.
  • France has identified 35 potential fast-track locations for new data centers.
  • The project leverages France's nuclear and renewable energy advantages for sustainable AI development.

In a significant move ahead of the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris, France and the United Arab Emirates have announced plans to invest up to €50 billion ($52 billion) in building one of the world's largest AI-focused data centers in France.

The agreement, signed by French President Emmanuel Macron and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, centers on constructing a data center with an unprecedented capacity of up to 1 gigawatt.

This development aligns with France's strategic push to leverage its energy infrastructure for AI advancement.

France's digital and AI minister Clara Chappaz revealed that the government has already identified 35 potential locations for new data centers, offering streamlined administrative approvals.

The country's energy profile, with 65% nuclear power and 25% renewable sources, positions it as an attractive destination for environmentally conscious tech investments.

The project will be backed by a consortium of French and Emirati investors, including MGX, the UAE's specialized AI investment firm.

MGX's involvement is particularly notable given its recent participation in SoftBank and OpenAI's Stargate initiative.

This announcement comes at a crucial time, just days before the Paris AI Action Summit, where global leaders and tech executives will convene at the Grand Palais.

Expected attendees include U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, China's Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, and key European leaders, suggesting more significant AI-related announcements may follow.

The investment represents a major step in France's ambition to establish itself as a leading force in global AI infrastructure, while addressing growing concerns about the environmental impact of large-scale AI operations.
