Genetics testing company 23andMe has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S., citing financial struggles and legal challenges.
The company also announced that its co-founder and CEO, Anne Wojcicki, has resigned with immediate effect, though she plans to bid for the company as an independent buyer.
The bankruptcy filing allows 23andMe to attempt a court-supervised sale of its assets. The company stated that it will continue operating during the process, with interim CEO Joe Selsavage stepping in to manage its affairs.
23andMe was once a leader in direct-to-consumer DNA testing, reaching a valuation of $6 billion at its peak. However, in recent years, the company has faced declining revenues, layoffs, and legal troubles.
In 2023, a massive data breach exposed the personal and genetic information of nearly 7 million customers, leading to a lawsuit that the company settled for $30 million in 2024.
Following the data breach, 23andMe laid off 40% of its workforce, cutting 200 jobs. The company’s financial struggles have been compounded by declining consumer interest in at-home DNA testing and its failure to achieve profitability since going public in 2021.
The California Attorney General issued a consumer alert following the bankruptcy filing, advising customers to consider deleting their data from the company’s servers.
23andMe has assured users that there will be no changes to how their data is stored and protected.
Despite its challenges, 23andMe’s leadership remains optimistic that a sale could help the company continue its mission of making genetic information accessible. However, the firm’s future remains uncertain as it navigates its financial and legal troubles.
