Detroit is poised to become the largest U.S. city to accept cryptocurrency for tax and fee payments, marking a major milestone in its push toward becoming a tech-friendly hub. Starting mid-2025, Detroit residents will be able to use popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum to pay municipal taxes and fees via a PayPal-managed platform, the city announced Thursday.
This payment option is a core part of Detroit’s strategy to modernize its services, positioning itself as a city that embraces technology and innovation. By integrating crypto payments, Detroit aims to foster financial inclusivity, especially for residents who may have limited access to traditional banking options.
“Detroit is building a technology-friendly environment that empowers residents and entrepreneurs,” stated Mayor Mike Duggan. “We’re excited to be one of the first major U.S. cities to explore blockchain’s civic applications.”
To reduce risks associated with crypto volatility, payments made in cryptocurrency will be converted into U.S. dollars on PayPal’s platform before they reach city accounts. This system will provide a stable payment process for both residents and the city.
Beyond payment solutions, Detroit is also encouraging blockchain innovators to explore other civic applications for the technology. Detroit’s Director of Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunity, Justin Onwenu, expressed enthusiasm for ideas that could enhance city operations.
“Blockchain technologies have the potential to drive greater accessibility and efficiency,”
Onwenu said, highlighting Detroit’s ambition to become a hub for forward-thinking entrepreneurs.
Detroit’s crypto initiative follows similar efforts in states like Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana, where crypto payments are accepted for certain public services.
