• WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka was kidnapped in Toronto and released after paying a $1 million CAD ransom.
  • Skurka confirmed that client funds and data were not impacted by the incident.

In a shocking turn of events, WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka was reportedly kidnapped in downtown Toronto on Wednesday, with captors demanding a $1 million ransom. The abduction took place during rush hour near University Avenue and Richmond Street, with Skurka allegedly forced into a vehicle. Hours later, after electronically transferring the ransom, Skurka was found safe in Centennial Park, Etobicoke, according to CBC reports.

The WonderFi CEO’s ordeal highlights a troubling trend of targeting crypto executives as decentralized assets gain popularity and high valuations. Jameson Lopp, a security expert, noted Skurka's kidnapping marks the 171st documented instance of physical violence to obtain cryptocurrency. This comes amid rising concerns over the physical safety of crypto leaders in Canada and worldwide.

In a statement to CBC Toronto, Skurka reassured that

“Client funds and data remain safe, and were not impacted by this incident,” adding that the “safety and security of all WonderFi's employees are paramount.”

WonderFi, a prominent Canadian crypto firm backed by Shark Tank's Kevin O’Leary, recently reported $41 million CAD in revenue for the past nine months. The incident took place just a day after WonderFi's third-quarter earnings report.

Crypto executives have increasingly become targets for criminals seeking quick, untraceable payments. Skurka’s ordeal follows a similar incident in 2022, where Aiden Pleterski, known as the “Crypto King,” was kidnapped and tortured over allegations of misusing investor funds.

As crypto continues to make headlines, online scams are also on the rise. Scammers in Santa Barbara, California, have recently been sending threatening messages demanding Bitcoin payments, attaching images of victims' homes as intimidation.
