- Cluely raises $15M in seed funding from a16z to expand its AI-powered task assistant platform.
- The startup helps users with everything from essays to job applications, branding itself as a "cheat engine for life."
- Cluely aims to scale responsibly, building moderation and feedback features amid concerns about ethics and misuse.
Cluely, the AI-powered desktop assistant that delivers real-time support, has secured $15 million in Series A seed funding led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
The new funding comes roughly two months after it raised $5.3 million in seed funding co-led by Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures.
The provocative new player in the AI productivity space gained a lot of negative attention over their bold tagline, "Cheat on Everything", which sparked a lot of debates across the education and hiring sectors.
The San Francisco-based AI startup founders, Roy Lee and Neel Shanmugan, stated that Cluely’s mission is to democratize access to high-quality support and accelerate task completion through AI.
Lee and Shanmugam were suspended from Columbia University earlier this year for developing an undetectable AI-powered tool called "Interview Coder" to help engineers chat on technical interviews.
“Widespread AI use will render traditional interviews obsolete,” Lee said, suggesting future assessments may focus more on creativity and culture fit.
Cluely's AI-driven assistant functions quietly on users' desktops, adeptly analysing live audio and on-screen context to provide proactive insights.
This tool has drastically gained significance in high-pressure professional environments.
Originally popularised among consumers through bold marketing strategies, Cluely has demonstrated its worth in enterprise settings — especially in sales — swiftly obtaining contracts and implementations.
"We see real opportunity in Cluely’s vision to pioneer a new category of proactive, multimodal AI assistants." a16z general partner Bryan Kim explained why Cluely captured their interest.
"Unlike traditional note-taking and transcription products, Cluely combines instantaneous responsiveness with deep contextual understanding, effectively positioning it across the consumer and enterprise markets."
The new capital will help Cluely scale its engineering team, enhance moderation and trust and safety features, and grow its marketing and content strategy, including its team of "growth interns".
