- Plex increases Plex Pass subscription prices by 40% monthly and 75% annually starting April 29.
- Remote playback becomes a paid feature with a new budget-friendly Remote Watch Pass option.
- Their updated privacy policy clarifies data-sharing practices while protecting personal media information.
Streaming service Plex announced on Wednesday its first price increase in ten years for its premium Plex Pass subscription, citing rising operational costs and planned feature expansions.
Monthly subscribers will see prices rise from $4.99 to $6.99, while annual subscriptions jump from $39.99 to $69.99—a 75% increase.
The one-time lifetime Plex Pass option will more than double from $119.99 to $249.99, representing the steepest increase at 108%.
Current subscribers have until April 29 to lock in the lifetime pass at the existing rate before the changes take effect.
The company also announced significant changes to its service structure. Remote playback for personal media, previously offered free, will become exclusive to paid subscriptions.
Non-subscribers wishing to access this feature can opt for the new Remote Watch Pass at $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually—targeting users who don't need full Plex Pass features but want to stream from others' servers.
In a consumer-friendly move, Plex is eliminating the one-time activation fee previously required to remove playback limitations on mobile devices.
The company also updated its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, emphasizing that personal media data remains protected. However, the changes clarify how Plex shares user activity data based on account settings, including for advertising purposes.
"These changes weren't made lightly," stated Plex in its announcement, explaining that the increases will fund ongoing service improvements, including integration with Common Sense Media ratings, a new server management app, and an open API for server integrations.
The price adjustments follow similar increases from major streaming services including Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, and Disney+, reflecting broader industry trends toward subscription revenue growth.
